"Monsieur et Madame Vaillancourt"

It's been awhile! I have wanted to blog, I have thought about blogging, but I have been so darn busy with all the life changes, traveling, working, trying to Ironman train... it seems there are never enough hours in the day to accomplish all that I want to accomplish!! Such is life, right?
The biggest highlight since my last blog is of course, marrying mon homme!! We had a beautiful day, honestly, I could not have scripted it better! It was a small intimate wedding of close family and a few friends who were able to make the 'destination' wedding to the Arctic tundra "where it snows 365 days a year, 24 hours a day" or so they advertise in Epcot's "O'Canada" :)
I decided that rather than recap the entire day: which I could easily do, there were so many great moments, I figured I would recap my top 5 favorites from the day:

To recite the vows~ It was extremely important to Simon & I that we hear our vows in our respective mother tongue. Being that our wedding was entirely in French, save for a few readings, etc, and my French is getting pretty darn good- I still wanted to hear Simon say his vows to me in English. He completely agreed, and was secretly thinking about doing that before we discussed it (as we were wedding prepping). This was special not only to me, but to my family and friends that cannot speak French. They were able to understand what Simon was vowing to me- without having to read it translated in the program. Obviously I said my vows to Simon in French, and it was a special moment I know we will never forget. Most importantly, it was the biggest part of the day!!! :)

Lola's moment to shine! For our get-away car.. it was no surprise we used Lola! Simon's "mexican mistress" and beetle he purchased when he was living in Mexico in 2007 and drove it from Puebla, Mexico to Montreal, QC!! Needless to say, Lola has been quite the little traveler herself, and Simon has rebuilt and worked on that engine as a side project for the past few years. It couldn't have been scripted better, that Simon's sister-in-law drove Lola (all clean, and dressed- complete with bow & Canadian maple syrup cans affixed to her rear bumper) to the Church, and positioned her on the Limousine row outside the church. There was Miss Lola in between two gigantic hummer limousines... smiling and happy! After we did the family photos outside the church, Simon and I were getting into Lola to drive her the 3 blocks to the reception (for photos mainly) and wouldn't fate have it: Lola did not want to start! Simon tried 4 separate times- no power from the battery!! Marie-Josée (Simon's sister-in-law) at this point is freaking out because she thought she broke Lola, or didn't turn her all the way off/causing battery to run down, or WHATEVER, but needless to say, she thought it was her fault. Louis, Simon's brother as well as my brother are leaning in Simon's window to ask what was going on.. as Simon tries starting Lola several more times. At this point, we have a massive audience of pedestrians stopping to watch the situation unfold, our entire group of wedding guests, the drivers of the other limo's (laughing) and even police! People were taking photos!! This went on for what felt like 5 minutes, and as I put my hand on the door and began opening the door to get out and walk to the reception, Simon immediately has a light bulb situation, yells out "Wait!!" and reaches behind to lift up the backseat, and jiggle the battery terminal. Two seconds later.... VROOM!!!! Lola springs to life!! I kid you not.. THE ENTIRE STREET erupted in cheer!! Strangers were yelling and whistling and taking photos. It really couldn't have been scripted better! Lola, upon her big moment to shine- got embarrassed, but held her audience in suspense just long enough before she let out the performance of a lifetime!

The machete... Simon & I used a machete to cut our two wedding cakes. The majority of our family and friends present, did not know the significance of why on earth we used a gigantic machete to cut our wedding cakes- so the story was repeated several times over. It was, more than just a large knife. When Simon was living in Mexico, he took a several month backpacking trip all through Central America. (The stories are many, of which you can read/or use google translate to read- all about on his blog) One of his many destinations was Guatamala. Being that Simon climbed mountains several times on his adventures, he was eager to climb a mountain in Guatamala- and this time, decided to do it solo. There-in is one of several key learnings: never climb a mountain solo, & gps is your friend. Long story short, Simon got lost in the cloud Forest descending down after climbing the mountain, and had to spend the night IN on the mountain, all alone, in Guatamala. Keep in mind, there are animals you have to worry about- BIG, TEETH, HUNGRY animals! He began rationing his food & water, but luckily the one thing he did have with him, was a machete he had purchased the day before. That machete in effect, 'saved his life' in that he was able to cut down branches to build a fire to sleep next to through the night (as the temperates drop significantly on that mountain when the sun goes down). So THAT is why we used it.

My sister. I had the best maid-of-honor EVER! I was so excited that I could have my sister be the person by my side, and the signature on our wedding certificate. Although, truth be told, she is so much more than that! I am so proud of her, and all that she has accomplished! She is going to do big things, and turn the occupational therapy world on its head! Additionally, she will be the one taking care of all of us when we get older!! But for the wedding, she was amazing. She thought of everything for the pre-wedding rituals. I even learned several things about weddings & traditions! She had the something old/borrowed- my grandmother's wedding band, something blue- blue garter, new- was my dress, the sixpence- this was a new one for me- but traditionally, the groom carried a sixpence in his coat, now it is customary that the bride carries it, so in my shoe it went! She had cute things we all wore at the rehearsal dinner, and a 'bride to be' top while I got ready that morning! Even though we didn't do formal toasting at our reception, she prepared the most touching MOH speech, which she had written down- and Mom gave to me later. It was amazing. I was so glad she was there by my side! I also had the largest experience of nerves I have EVER had in my life (and I do NOT get nervous)! She was great, she did lunges with me, she made me laugh, she got me dramamine, she made the morning so much less stressful! It was amazing. (And a special thank you to her rere boyfriend John, for keeping the humor up in the room, and going on coffee errands for us!)
Last, but certainly not least- my Family & Friends! Simon and I were blessed to have our close family and friends there with us to share in the day. For me, it was especially wonderful, to have my family travel up from Florida, my Aunt from Arkansas, Aunt, Uncle, and cousins from NY, second- cousins from NY, second-cousins from Illinois, Aunt from Georgia, and my goodness- the close family friends who made it: the Quinns from NY, the Colley's from FL, and my second Mom & Dad from Pensacola- the Cooks. I was blessed to have my sister's from other mother's make the trek: Michelle (and BJ), Jill, Andre-Anne, & Katie B who would have been my bridesmaids if we had decided to have a big wedding. Of course, it was understandable that many could not make it- for all intents, it was a destination wedding for my side. The family and friends that sent me beautiful messages regretting not being able to make it- were so sweet & touching. I know they were there in spirit, and that is what matters to me.
The great thing is, these are only the tip of the iceberg. There were so many other memorable parts of the weekend, day, that are for the most part, encapsulated in photos, but will take a novel to write here. I haven't even mentioned my AMAZING nouveau famille that I have married in to!! A few lines wouldn't do them justice, they deserve a full blog! I am so excited and honored to merge our two families together, and cannot wait to get everyone together again soon. We're still working on a trip down to FL!

It was a weekend we will never forget.

Things that make me smile

Mon homme
http://www.youtube.com/user/redkhs#p/u/21/7yY679hXbPQ
Je suis très excité d'être ta femme dans un mois :)

Dresses... summer, flowing, fun and practical. If I could wear dresses everyday I would.

Fruit-to-go. It is quite possible I might turn into one of these mouthwatering fruit strips pretty soon. I am averaging WAY TOO MANY per day. The USA needs to get on the ball with these, cause they definitely arent available down there!

Metro... I love jumping on the metro to go where I need to go!

Facinators... North America has been missing out. Im planning a full scale attack on N.A. soil to bring the facinator to everyday activity.

Sparkle jewelry... Toronto is giving my credit card a work-out :)

The Lake... I smile every time I walk outside. I LOVE WHERE I LIVE!!

GO HABS GO!

What can I say... moving to Canada, being engaged to a Canadian = adopting Hockey as my new über favorite sport to obsess about (but not play). Yes, Hockey can now be added to the list that includes Football and Lacrosse.
This being said, it wasn't very hard for Simon to recruit me to the Montréal fan base. My Canadian friends were a little disappointed I did not adopt the Toronto Maple Leafs as my team.. but 'The Leafs suck' so... Habs it is! Just kidding.. The leafs didn't have a chance... I was going to be a Habs fan from the start.
So far in my Hockey obsession we have had the opportunity to watch the Habs play on our 46 inch flat screen= love for a sports fan! How on earth did Simon and I live without télévision for the past two years??? Watching sports in HD has never been more exciting in the comfort of your own home!
So the playoffs have been kind to the Habs so far.. we managed to pick off the #1 team (Washington Capitals) and then the #2 returning Stanley Cup Champions (Pittsburgh Penguins) and my best friend Jill's team... so naturally- sh*t talking ensued, and the Habs won (nah nahnny boo boo Jill!) ;)
Now all that's left are the Philly Flyers (#7 team) that stand in the Habs way to making the Stanley Cup Final. Looks like Game 1 will go down for Philly... but hopefully we can come back for Game 2.

Sport, Fights, HD, and Beer... I love this sport. GO HABS GO!

Oh.. and I also love LaPierre smiling when he fights :) hahaha.

Let the drum beat guide you...

This blog's sole purpose is to highlight my current musical obsession. K'naan is about to be a big big thing... just call it a hunch. I came across this song at the end of a movie, and started looking for more. Come to find out he did the FIFA World Cup anthem which is about to broadcast all over the world in the month leading up to the World Cup (which starts in June).
My current favorite song by him, so far, is "In the Beginning". What can I say... I am a slave to the music, and when I hear a good drum beat, I just cant help but move! The dancer in me will never go away. Find the thing that compels you to move and move :)

"In the beginning there was hum
From a poet whose pulse fell
Drum drum drum!

He would perform prayers and all
Till one day he heard a voice call
Come come come!"

An American girl in... CANADA!

Well... so it isn't straight out of an episode of Sex and the City, but I thought I'd steal a bit from an episode title! Yes, after years of dreaming of moving international~ I am finally getting my wish! I am moving to Toronto!! How exciting is this! I get to keep working for E&J, the greatest company in the world, and I get to do it on foreign soil! I couldn't be happier! I also get to work partially in French, but this will expand, as my comprehension of the French language expands. First with labels, and when I travel into the provence of Quebec... and hopefully more in the future!! I am motivated and facinated to learn French, and the classes will begin as soon as I am settled in Toronto.
It's funny... at first thought, you might be thinking 'well it's Canada, it really isnt THAT foreign' well, tell that to my bank accounts, and collection of medical records, and cell phone! Everything has to change! I may not be crossing the pond (yet), but I might as well be! I will be getting a new cell phone up there, as well as new everything else! I have already started the process of opening up new bank accounts, credit cards, etc. All the little things we dont think about day to day that have to change. How about getting paid in a different currency!! Taxes, file for taxes, etc!! It makes me want to take a nap just thinking about it!
I cannot begin to convey my excitement! To get this great opportunity to move to a foreign country, learn their culture, and their language energizes me more than I can express! Granted, 85% of Toronto is anglo-phone, in the future my apartment will NOT be! I am focused and driven to speak/read/write le français fluently. Simon's 1st language is french, and so it will be my second! Besides, I could not imagine not speaking french to our kids growing up- as much as I would speak to them in English. It is such a major part of who Simon is... and it is something I want greatly to understand and appreciate.
I look forward to living in a new part of the world. A BEAUTIFUL part at that! Canada is amazing. I thought I saw beautiful countryside before I visited Canada for the first time.. and I was wrong. I look forward to seeing new countryside on rides and runs.. and even from the side of a mountain!! Maybe we can even catch a glimpse of a MOOSE! I tease Simon all the time about seeing a Moose. Maybe one day. Preferrably in a non-hostile situation where I am not fearing for my life...
Donèt worry... Simon is already a step ahead. He bought me a pair of hockey skates to skate the Rideau Canal during winter... and I plan to become proficient at all sports little Canadian children grow up playing :) I already have my 'Canada shoes' now I'll get to use them... eh?! :)

Sometimes I laugh so hard... I cry!

Muah ha ha!! Have I mentioned lately how amazingly awesome my fiance is? Well, he is. Not only has he spearheaded our wedding plans, but due to the fact that I am not yet 'in country' he has had to coordinate all the wedding prep phone calls, etc. Normally these fun tasks are left to a bride, while the groom takes the more groomly approach of 'tell me where to stand, tell me what to wear' (his words, not mine :) but the work done by my fiance has been impressive.
I also have to brag and say he designed our awesome Save-the-Date!! Uniquely 'us' with none of the girly frilly ridiculous stuff that neither of us would want on a Save-the-Date, or anything attached to us anyway...
So as a reward for my fiance's accomplishments and hard work, I want to make sure I overly impress him walking down the run way (I mean aisle). No half-ass, already done wedding dress will do for my man... OHHHH NO Gurlfriend... I want him to stop dead in his thought process and think 'yes, THIS is the woman I am spending the rest of my life with' I have narrowed my dress selections down to a few choices:
Dress #1

I like this dress because it is like a big present with bows, and lace, and ribbon. Nevermind that it looks like a phallus.. I think it's making a comeback, not to mention in Europe.. look at architecture over there!! Hellooooo obsession.

Dress#2

Nothing says 'Im proud to be an American getting married in Canada' like this dress. I think hunting boots and a Nascar garder will kick it up a notch.. Sooooeeeeeeeiiii!

Dress#3

No real explanation needed. It makes a statement. No better time to announce I'm an 8month pregnant and proud woman like my wedding day... I just hope I can find a hair dresser that can master the craft that this model has created. I feel it adds an extra something special.

I just hope Simon can contain his excitement until we finish the ceremony. I know he will be thrilled with any of these 3 excellent choices. I just hope I can narrow it down by the date! Maybe I could have wardrobe changes??

2009... a year in review

Well, how does one encapsulate a year?? To say that 2009 was my best year yet, is a vast understatement! I know I know, the engagement thing might be the first thing that comes to mind to make this year ‘better than the rest’ however, as Simon and I had this very conversation last night, we realized there was so much more to our year.. the engagement was the hard top on a very yummy Crème Brule.

Rather than make this another small novel (which I can with ease) I’ll stick to the highlights:

More excursions to Europe!! I can now check off London, Scotland, Lux, France, and Spain off the list! The highlight of my two European visits this year is without a doubt running with the bulls in Pamplona. Simon and I have already decided that if our kids are anything like us, we better hide the running with the bulls video & pics until they are much older! I think my father is still mad at himself for showing me/telling me about his running with the bulls… and from the age of 5 I held on to the fascination and desire to one day ‘be like Dad and run with the bulls’! What on earth is gonna be our excuse when our little son or daughter says they want to do it too? “Why NOT! Both you and Dad did it!” Yeah.. we’re hiding the evidence!

I got to check two other countries off the list this year that were firsts for me: Republica Dominicana & Canada! Or as I will refer to them… the island where 25 to 40 year olds get unlimited bar tabs and golf carts that go 30+ mph, and the great white tundra of O’Canada Land.. “where it snows 365 days a year, 24 hours a day” J. I was fortunate to get to spend New Year’s with Simon’s family in Montréal & St. Jovite (his Grand-Mère’s cabin) where we toasted the New Year at a cool club in downtown Montréal that use to be an indoor swimming pool (which is now a lower level dance floor!) St. Jovite was AMAZINGLY beautiful… tucked away in the mountains about an hour and a half outside Montréal. Frozen covered lake, REAL warm fire to warm yourself by, and food… oh mon dieu! Everyone warned me that his Grand-Mère would make so much food I wouldn’t believe it… and this was no exaggeration. It was all so amazingly delicious, I welcomed the added pounds! The chocolate cake, don’t even get me started on Le gateau au chocolat….. AMAZING!

I got to check another sport off my list: Simon took me snowboarding! We met up with Marie-Loup & Benoit, and I realized just how much of a beach girl I am! Simon & Marie-Loup were awesome on snowboard’s (which further supports my stereotype that all Canadians come out with hockey skates & ski or snowboards) and after an hour one-on-one session with an instructor and a few trips down the green trail, I actually made it down successfully… only falling a couple times.. SUCCESS! Please note however: snowboarding, while similar to surfing with a hint of wakeboarding… actually hurts when you fall… unlike water, which is much less painful! We also went snowshoeing (another new outdoor activity I had never tried) with Louis & Marie-Josée, which was a grand experience getting hitched to gigantic rackets with animal hair as the ‘net’! We went on a two hour hike up to the sugar shack (obviously not operational in the winter) with a few breaks for snow fights, which usually resulted in me lying face down with a pile of snow in my face.. I will get my revenge!! BTW if you ever get a chance to see someone sprint off in snow shoes.. it is probably one of the funniest things you will ever see.. I about broke into an asthma attack I was laughing so hard!

I returned to World Champs 70.3! After a year of transitions for work, injury, etc., I was anxious to try and re-qualify for Worlds 70.3 at Florida 70.3 this year. I did, besting my time down there (from 08’) by 15 minutes. I returned to Clearwater this year, family along for the weekend, and Rob & Emily down from Atlanta, and after spotty training due to the increased amount of work this holiday season, managed to best my time from 07’ by 14 minutes! I was very pleased with how the day went, esp considering how sporadic my training had become September through November!

I got to be a cheerleader! I got to watch Simon finish Ironman Cozumel via the internet (well, athlete tracker, which was BUSTED) and my family and I got to see him post-race via Skype. It was an exciting moment for him, 4 years after he completed his first Ironman distance race. I wish I could have been there, but the race falling on a Sunday, makes it hard to be at work by Monday.. and I had severely blown my vacation time! No worries for the next one though, because not only will I be there- I’ll be racing! Simon and I signed up for Ironman Arizona in November of 2010! Look out! We have a date in the desert this November!

This brings us to December, and the exciting experience of sharing my hometown with Simon, in addition to how we spend our Christmas. Simon arrived on the evening of the 22nd and we drove to Pensacola the following afternoon for 5 days in Pcola with the fam. On Christmas Eve, at the half way point of our MTB ride, Simon proposed! I was completely surprised, as he has been telling me for a month or so, that it might be delayed for a couple months, yada yada, to try and get me off the scent. It worked! And what was even more exciting for me, was that he combined our love for languages into his proposal- First German, then Spanish, then English, then finally Il a posé LA QUESTION à moi en Français et J’ai dit YES! Only because my brain was racing 1 million miles per hour, and I couldn’t get the Oui out… so out came English J The part I loved the most about it though… was the thought he put into it. We met in Cancun two years ago, post-race, sweaty, dirty, tired, outside, and he wanted to propose in the same manner. Although we weren’t as sweaty or tired as you are post half-ironman, we were dirty from the dirt, and outside… and I wouldn’t have it any other way :)

So 2009 ends most poetically, in a crescendo. Thankfully, being the planners that we are… 2010 will continue right where 2009 left off. How to make it better? Well, add a few trips back and forth between Canada & Florida, island adventures in the spring, triathlons in the summer, a wedding in August- followed by an international honeymoon NOT TELLING!, and an Ironman in November… and I think you have the base for a great year… speaking of base… reminds me of base camp… as in Everest base camp… stay tuned J

Life is as much of an adventure as you choose to make it.
